At least it wasn't the aircon! The fridge has been a little fickle lately and now it's just died.

At lunch time today we realize the fridge's freezer was dripping condensation from it's ceiling. Then we realized the bread in there was totally defrosted. This lead to us realizing that the fresh fruit and veggies in the fridge which seemed to be turning faster than normal, was due to a warming fridge. Next we saw the red warning light in the fridge. At this point we dumped everything in the garbage.

Shortly later a weird sound caused us to turn off the breaker to the fridge. Flipping it back on resulted in some horrible sounds that must have been the air compressor dying a real death.

I figure we just threw out:

  • $35 of meat (frozen)
  • $30 fruit and vegetables (frozen)
  • $10 prata (frozen)
  • $15 frozen dumplings (frozen)
  • $20 already made meals frozen to use another day
  • $10 salami
  • $50 fresh fruit/vegetables
  • $10 soup that I'd just made
  • $15 dairy/coconut milk
  • $30 of yogurt (those individual packages are expensive here)
  • $10 fresh noodles
  • $30 sauces (like pasta sauce, salsa, mayonnaise)

I thought our Helper might cry over all the waste. I couldn't give anything away, or ask anyone to store anything for us, because of how far defrosted everything was by the time we realized. Who knows whether things were partially freezing and refreezing before today also.

We might have saved 3 loaves of bread, 2 packs of hamburger buns, and 2 packs of hot dog buns - but I doubt it. With the heat and humidity of the kitchen, I think they'll mold before we even buy new meat.

I'm pretty sure most of the condiments will make it, but we might just start over from scratch.

We ate the ice cream, despite being full from lunch. It was almost milk-shake-y. The kids enjoyed being told to each as many ice cream popsicles as the could. MsI took that challenge seriously.

My chocolate stash better not melt before I figure out what to do with it; I can't just leave it in the house, so I've got it slowly warming up in the empty fridge. Maybe I can make some new friends by handing it out on the playground tonight.

Thankfully I hadn't ordered groceries, I had meant to get to that this morning.

The landlord stopped by to measure for a new fridge. It will likely be at least a few days before a new one arrives.

Hawker centre, take out and/or daily shopping it is.

We'll go pick up some fresh fruit and keep it on the counter, although we'll see who tries to steal it first - the children or the sugar ants.
