Copthorne Hotel, Cameron Highlands

The Copthorne Hotel sits at 5300 feet above sea level  - the highest point in the Cameron Highlands. It was cold and windy up here. We literately saw the fog roll down the hill.

It was 33 C when we landed in Malaysia, but after our 2 hour drive it was about 17 C. This doesn't sound cold, but it was cuttingly due to the high humidity. Also our clothes didn't help. We had some light pants or dresses to choose from and a light sweater each. We tried to head out for a walk in the evening. The cold drove us back inside where we warmed up with green tea and Chinese food.

We had tried to find some sweatshirts or warmer clothes, but in the neighbouring shops the clothes were all way too large or so poor of quality that the zippers didn't even zip. My sister though she had found success with leg warmers. Back at the hotel she discovered these were actually Arm Covers!

There weren't any heaters in the room, so we called for extra blankets. They brought us lovely warm-from-the dryer blankets, but informed us that they could only provide 2 per room. We tried to argue that we were in a 3 bed room, but 2 was the rule. They were Queen size blankets, so my sister and I pushed our beds together so we could share and it worked just fine.

Not long after this, we tried to turn off the light, and failed. We were finally warm and ready to sleep. We searched high and low for the light switch which would turn off our bedside lights. In 2 nights we never found it! We even tried pulling the beds away from the wall to see if they were blocking a switch. Finally we decided to pull the key card out to stop all the power to our room. We used our iPhone flashlights to use the Bathroom in the night.

Nope, still not the light switch.

A normal person would have phoned the front desk to ask for help in this, but we couldn't stop laughing long enough to call.

The hotel had tried to decorate for Christmas, but it was a bit of a flop. The trees were crocked and the decorations were cheery but quite right. The main lobby had a large tree, which was just a little off centre - not quite in the middle under the chandelier. And it was quite crocked.

I didn't think this tree was too bad. But why is there a white picket fence around it?

The height of the hotel made the view from our room spectacular.

Although the next morning was still chilly at the hotel, the good tea and buffet breakfast helped. We left the hotel about 10:30 am with our driver and the temperature was warm and enjoyable by then. Before lunch we had peeled off any extra layers we had added.

The Copthorne Hotel is considered a 4 star hotel. It had a spa with a large selection of massages and spa treatments. It has a swimming pool (although it closed at 5 pm) and 3 restaurants. We ate in all 3 and the food was good.

The cost is about $75 CAD/SG a night. We found it okay, but not great. The price jump to a nicer hotel was about double, but most of those rooms were for only 2 people which is shy we settled on the Copthorne Hotel. If I was going again with only 2 people, I would stay in a pricier hotel than this one.
