I miss having a car. I'd love to go for a long drive.

But getting around Singapore is still very easy without a car. And, no matter what option we choose for transit, it's still significantly cheaper than owning a car here.

Since COVID we usually take Grab and avoid public transit for most things. We do take the bus to take MsC on the short weekly trip to her Musical Theater class. Occasionally we will take an MRT home if seems like it will be quiet on the train.

We are not fans of Taxis. I'm never quite sure if they understand me, and sometimes they ask me a few times for the address before they take off. They are by the minute so they tend to drive too fast and they are never impressed if we have car seats for the kids as they're just taking up their time and not required in a taxi.

For Grab, car seats are required so they're more understanding, but when we have 3 kids and 3 car seats they're usually off driving while I'm still standing in the middle of the car buckling kids in. Which means we usually get Grab Premium. It's a few extra dollars, but therefore, they're willing to wait while I buckle everyone in. They're all about the extra service. They'll jump out and get my stroller out of the trunk. They will even unbuckle children and walk them around to the sidewalk. Also with a Grab, I type my drop off location into the app so I know we are going to the right location and my credit card is automatically billed so I'm not fumbling with money. Sometime the cabs will only take cash, but they never tell you that in advance.

Usually we end up in a rather nice van, but nothing too special. Occasionally you win the lottery and end up in a extremely expensive car. Those drivers tell us they usually only do high end limo services, usually as airport transfers or where someone important hires them for the week. Those cars are usually just picking up one Grab Premium fare on the way back from dropping off their real client.

I got a pretty cool ride the other day on my way back from Ikea. I paid just $8.50 for Grab Premium and got an 8-seater Limo Excursion Bus all to myself, even the floor was leather.  I would have paid almost the same for a smelly dirty taxi. This driver asked that I please not put my plant directly on the floor, so I slipped it into my Ikea Bag. When I got out, I saw that he hoped in the back with a cloth to ensure everything was all still spotless.
