Oven conquered

We've been in this condo for 3 months and today I finally baked something in the oven. It took slightly longer than the recipe said, but they are cooked. We ate chocolate cupcakes with store bought vanilla icing and chocolate sprinkles. It was a gluten free mix that showed up with my kitchen stuff from Canada. Ms.C cracked the eggs and Ms.I did the mixing with the hand beaters.

The sprinkles look the same, but are called "coloured rice" here. They're less sweet than I'm used to. In Canada sprinkles are pretty much tiny pieces of sugar candy. Here the ones we got are a cocoa base and do come in the mix of colours. I have to keep them in the freezer as they melt in the cupboard.

When we moved in I couldn't figure out how to use the oven. I asked the Landlord and she couldn't figure it either, so she brought me the User Manual, but I never got around to reading it. We had a neighbour over recently and she showed me her tricks:

  • Remember to turn on the switch for the oven in the cupboard.
  • Pick an oven setting which doesn't use a timer. I hadn't realized there were any settings without one.
  • Remember to hit the Start button again if you open the oven door for any reason, because opening the door shuts the oven off.

The kitchen wasn't even that hot when we were finished.
