Orchid Garden, Botanic Gardens

We spent a rainy morning wandering the Historic Orchid Garden located at the centre of the Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Entry to the Orchid Garden is usually $5, but was free for residents during the Christmas Holidays. The garden is very tropical, with lots of greenery to contrast the bright blooms. It's not just the range of colours here though; the shapes and how the orchids grow varies so much too.

Visiting on a rainy day didn't damper our spirits. We had our umbrellas and our cameras. We needed both! With more than 600 orchids on display there was a picture which could be taken every few steps.

This garden is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been at it's current location since 1854. It's work with Orchid breeding allowed Singapore to be the the first country in the world to export orchids - showing orchids to the world in the early 1960's.

The main paths lead up to the top of a small hill and then the paths wide down the the hillside. It's not exactly stroller/wheel chair friendly. The paths are wide and smooth enough, although it is a little hilly. The only problem is that one side of the garden is stairs. Without access to the stairs, you need to backtrack out of each path instead of looping down the hill in an S fashion - It's the only thing I think that could be improved. Still the garden is well worth the walking.

I forgot that the kids love to take pictures when we are Gardens. I didn't think to bring our "kids" camera. Keeping the kids occupied meant, I didn't have my camera at hand to take many pictures myself.

There's a fancy looking Restaurant with a Buffet just outside the entrance to the Orchid Gardens. Next time the girls may get left at home, so I can get a really good look at the orchids, have control of the camera, and that lunch looks pretty appealing.

It was a rainy day so only viewed the Orchid Garden, but it's just a small part of the Botanic Gardens. You could spend all day at the Botanic Gardens!
