Sentosa Nature Walks
There are lovely walking trails on Sentosa Island. We like to start our walk with a popsicle from home.
Sentosa has great signage explaining the history and nature. There's also a free 2 floor nature centre and a tree top trail. Apparently there are monkeys, but we haven't seen them. Apparently you need to get visit early in the morning to have the best chance of seeing them. We have seen lots of other things like African Snails, Hornbills (birds), ... other interesting plants and insects.
Actually one of the first things we did was talk about safety. We do need to remember this isn't Canada and our assumption about animals aren't always quite right. We spent a while talking about the poisonous animals found in Singapore: scorpions, centipedes, some snakes and larger lizards. We haven't come across any of these in real life on Sentosa, but there are some fun statues scattered along the trails. We found a fun way to learn the names of snakes too: choosing our favorite snake pillar at the rain shelter; each one is labeled.
Some of the signs are really in depth, like this one below about Fibonacci Numbers. We pick a sign or 2 and focus on that for our walk. We often compare what we see to what we were used to seeing in Canada. We love the nature calls buttons in the centre which helps us identify what we're hearing on our walks.
After enjoying this lovely walk, we ended up on a paved path. Next thing you know we were almost run down by hotel staff diving a golf cart full of guests. I guess we weren't on a nature trail anymore, and were on a road used to get to one of the resorts. I was just glad that the kids were right beside me and weren't wandering ahead. I find it easy to miss things like this in Singapore. We miss the subtleties, assuming that a "road" will be well marked, or that golf carts would go slowly around blind corners. We're a bit more careful on the paved or wider "trails" now.
