The Boardwalk and Labrador Park
There's a large Boardwalk along the waterfront bordering our condo complex. It reminds us a bit of the West Bay Walkway in Victoria, BC, Canada. The Boardwalk here in the Harbourfront area in Singapore is a wide flat walking path that overlooks the Marina, then curves out of the harbour, hovering above the water, over beaches, and running through the trees. It was quite hot at 6 pm when we set out with the girls, but as soon as we got out to the Boardwalk, there was a nice refreshing breeze.
The kids had their new scooters and learned to brake quite quickly with all the cyclists, strollers, walkers, joggers and other scooters they encounters. We adults were a bit concerned in the beginning that the kids might run someone down, but the crowd cleared a bit once we got into Labrador Park and farther away we got from the condo complexes.
About 30 minutes along the Boardwalk (about 1/2 way) you turn out of the harbour and there's a small playground. It's pretty old-school, with a teeter-totter, swings, and an actual metal Merry-Go-Round. But the kids loved it, besides sand is always fun. There's some old military stuff around, and interesting signage explaining the harbour's history. I like all the comments about pirates!
If you keep going along the Boardwalk here, you will find a more modern playground and eventually the Fishing Pier. Keep watch for that modern Playground. It's set back from the Boardwalk, closer to the forest.
You can also follow paths away from the Boardwalk into the more jungle-esque areas. The cicadas are loud here and you can hear a lot of birds, maybe even some monkeys. We find bug spray required in Labrador Park. The Boardwalk winds through the trees, which is also where you can also find a lot of Jungle Fowl (related to the domestic chicken). We've seen the roosters having a bit of a noisy, wing-flapping fight. The hens just calmly move out of the way.
We've seen Plantain Squirrels here too. They have a call that sounds more like a bird and their tails look like a long feather. If you stop too long in places here, the ants may also try to carry you away.
Perhaps, because it reminds me a little of home, the Boardwalk to and along the coast of Labrador Park is one of my favorite walks in Singapore so far. It would be an amazing place to go for a run too: flat, cool breeze, wide, with enough people using it to feel very safe. It's very well lit at night too, which is good because night falls quickly here (at around 7 pm all year), so we're often caught out after dark.
