Last weekend Jonathan and I left the kids with a Helper (babysitter) and set out to find the Southern-most point of Continental Asia. It's located just off Sentosa Island and not far from our home.

Jonathan finally put his feet in the Indian Ocean. It is bathtub warm. This spot looks like the perfect place for me to bring the kids when I'm by myself. The tiny island there off the coast means there's no waves or tidal current and Ms.C could definitely swim across. The other beaches we've been to around here have a steep slope and I constantly worry the waves are pulling her over her depth.

The view of the swimming spot from the suspension bridge.

You have to cross a suspension foot bridge to get across to the little island. The bridge is not very high off the water, but it does swing. It was also a bit of a tight fit when we passed people in the middle.

Crossing over.

Once on this tiny island we could see more islands in the distance and Jonathan asked, "How is this the southern-most part of Asia"?

It's not. It's the southern-most part of Continental Asia; meaning it's connected by bridge to the continent.

  • The island of Singapore is connected by a road bridge to Malaysia, which is on the continent.
  • Then there's a road bridge from Singapore to Sentosa Island.
  • Lastly Sentosa is connected to the tiny island by the foot bridge.

Pamana Island in Indonesia is the actual southern-most part of Asia. It's uninhabited island.

In order to get there, I figure we would need to fly from Singapore to the small island of Kupang for $350 - 450 SG each before heading for Rote. You can take a boat from Kupang to Rote. Aboard the Baharai Express it takes less than 2 hours.

  • Adults: $142,000 Rupiah ($17 SG). Children: $20,000 Rupiah ($2 SG).

Flying from Kupang only takes 30 minutes and looks to be about $343,000 Rupiah ($33 SG). It looks like Pamana Island is just off Rote.

It would be an interesting adventure.
